I ignore everything else on this first circuit because for me the glorious guns are what I'm after. I now do a couple of quick circuits around it, looking for any tier 4 weapons. Okay, so you've spotted a helicopter, got to it and killed the infected. Try to kill the infected slightly away from the helicopter so that their bodies don't fall on top of loot, potentially making you miss it. And I know, you can just shoot the extra infected too, but that clock is always counting down to the helicopter despawning - every second counts and you don't want to be wasting them dealing with extra infected. Also, some of the crash sites are near enough to the towns that shots will bring a lot of infected. You're playing on a low population server with probably single figure numbers of other people, but even then you'll be amazed at how quickly gunshots can draw someone to within shooting distance of you. I prefer to either run them over, or use an axe or pickaxe for single hit kills. When you reach the site take out the infected as quickly as possible. If the crash site isn't easily accessible by car, sometimes it's quicker to stick yourself with an injector and sprint to it. I also try to carry at least a couple of epi pens.

For this reason I prefer to drive an Ada as it handles cross field journeys the best (plus, as you're keeping your speed low, it doesn't matter that it's slow af).

Remember it might have just spawned in, or it could be a couple of minutes away from spawning out. When you spot a crash, get to it as quickly and directly as possible. If you have NVGs the smoke is just as easy to spot at night. Remember that it might be close, or it might be away in the distance. It's easy to see because apart from players and infected it is the only thing that moves in the landscape. In time you'll learn exactly where each site is and be able to spot even non smokers, but start by just looking for smoke. It might be behind trees and was blowing east or west the first time you looked and so wasn't visible, but then you look again and this time it's blowing straight up and easy to see. For this reason keep scanning ahead, left, right, behind the whole time to maximise your chances of seeing it. The smoke blows straight up, then to the west, then to the east. Sometimes you'll see the whole smoking helicopter sitting in the middle of a field, other times you'll see the top of a smoke stack peeking out from behind trees. I know those are low speeds but you need to stick to them for two reasons: you're looking for helicopters not trying to complete the loop as quickly as possible, and secondly game crashes or lag crashes eat up time that should be spent searching.ĭrive in third person, and continually move the camera from the front, to left to right, covering both sides of the road, and also looking directly behind you, to catch any that spawned in just after you passed. Drive at 30kph outside of towns, but drop your speed down to about 20kph when in towns. Start - ZAPRUDNOE ~ Novaya Petrovka ~ TOPOLNIKI ~ Vavilovo ~ LOPATINO ~ Vybor ~ KABANINO ~ Grishno ~ ZAPRUDNOE - Finishįrom start to finish the entire route is on 'yellow' main roads and should take you about 30-40 minutes to complete, not counting time you spend when you find crash sites.

If you follow this route you will be driving past 40 potential helicopter spawns, that will be visible from your car if they are smokers. I made it as close to a loop as possible, so you can join it anywhere you want. Once you've got a car up and running try the following route. They only last somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes at each site, so if you're walking you aren't covering enough ground fast enough. I then spent as long as it took finding a car using the spawn points in iZurvive. To start, I loaded up with food, water, duct tape etc, and also a car battery, radiator and spark plug, and then loaded in to a low pop persistence off server. If you want to find helicopters rather than just look for helicopters then you need to put a bit of groundwork in first. I thought I'd share my method with everyone and see if anyone else has thoughts on improving it.

After lots and lots of trial and error, I think I've got my helicopter hunting strategy as tight as is possible on Dayz.
